How Tirzepatide Works
Tirzepatide is a dual action molecule mimicking 2 naturally occuring hormones. Similarly to Semaglutide, it targets the GLP-1 receptor. Thus, this medicine results in a delay in gastric emptying (making you feel full longer), an improvement in blood glucose (sugar) utilization helping to burn carbohydrates for energy instead of being stored as fat, an increase in leptin sensitivity causing your body to preferentially burn body fat for longer periods of time, and changes to natural brain chemistry decreasing appetite. In clinical trials assessing obese subjects, the weight loss seen with Tirzepatide was fully sustained at the 40 week mark and appears to be continuous.
Tirzepatide is administered once weekly by subcutaneous injection with a very small insulin type needle. Most find this shot painless. There are 5 dose strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 15mg.
In the present trial, adults with obesity had average weight reductions of 19.5% and 20.9% with 10-mg and 15-mg doses of tirzepatide, respectively, as compared with a 3.1% weight reduction with placebo (treatment-regimen estimand).
Weight loss is seen quickly and consistently with Tirzepatide. However, users need to be patient, as some will need several weeks to months in order for the titration of the medication to reach the level at which the most significant weight loss is seen. Again, the majority of subjects in the studies lost over 20% of their body weight over the course of a year.
Do not use this drug if you have a health problem called Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2), or if you or a family member have had thyroid cancer.
